Inspiration
There aren't many of Vincent's paintings about which so much has been written throughout the years.1. The metaphorical interpretations of the subject matter behind these companion paintings have garnered a lot of attention. Each chair was painted by van Gogh. His personal chair is the one to the left of him. Gauguin's is the one to the right. Given that the table is from van Gogh's bedroom, it is likely that they once sat together and gazed out at the same scene while Gauguin was staying with Vincent in the yellow home in Arles. They are always and forever free of the bonds of friendship and memory in this picture.
