The Taxi Dancers i Archival Paper Print
Inspirations
Another fun, colorful painting to add to my Dance Series. I thought the whole story of Taxi Dancers was so interesting. I have seen this in movies but never knew it actually had a name.
A dancer who receives payment to dance with a partner is known as a taxi dancer. Similar to a cab driver driving a customer, the taxi dancer is compensated proportionally to the amount of time she spends dancing with her male partner.
In the 1920s and 1930s, cab dancers made their debut in the United States of America. Men who purchased dance tickets danced with young women who ranged in age from fifteen to twenty-eight. By 1931, there were 100 taxi-dance halls operating in New York alone, with a weekly capacity of 50,000 men.
